Understanding Laundry Marks on Clothing: Causes and Simple Tips

Noticing light spots or fading on underwear is a common experience for many women. This effect is usually caused by the natural acidity of vaginal secretions, which is completely normal. The vagina maintains a balanced environment with beneficial bacteria, primarily Lactobacillus, which produce lactic acid. This acidity helps prevent harmful bacteria and yeast from growing. Over time, when vaginal fluids come into contact with fabrics, especially cotton or other absorbent materials, they can subtly lighten the color of the cloth.

This process is harmless and shows that the body’s natural protective mechanisms are working. The degree of fading can vary depending on individual acidity levels, fabric type, dye quality, and laundry methods. Lighter fabrics or more absorbent materials may show more noticeable changes, while darker or synthetic fabrics may remain largely unchanged. Washing techniques, detergent, and exposure to sunlight can also influence the effect.
