Learning the Meaning of Showing Up

I left home at eighteen with a suitcase, a scholarship, and a firm belief that success meant going as far away as possible. My twin sister stayed behind as our mother’s health began to decline. She tried to explain that being present mattered just as much as chasing opportunities, but I dismissed it, convinced that leaving was the only way forward. In my mind, ambition meant distance—and I didn’t question that assumption.

Her days revolved around work, doctor visits, and caring for someone who needed her. I told myself I would return when the timing was right, when things were more stable. But time doesn’t pause for convenience. When I finally came back, it was because things had already reached a point I couldn’t undo.
