Why Tree Trunks Are Painted White—and How to Do It Right

If you’ve ever spotted a tree with a white-painted base, it’s not a stylistic choice—it’s a practical form of protection. Gardeners and orchard growers use this method to shield trees from winter sunscald, a condition caused by rapid temperature shifts between chilly nights and bright daytime sun.

These fluctuations can stress the bark, leading to cracks that weaken the tree and leave it vulnerable to disease.

The pale coating works by reflecting sunlight, helping the trunk stay at a more stable temperature throughout the day. This reduces the likelihood of damage and supports the tree’s long-term health. The technique is especially useful for younger trees, thin-barked varieties, and fruit trees that are more sensitive to environmental stress. When applied correctly, it acts like a seasonal barrier against harsh conditions.

To try this yourself, start with a water-based latex paint, which is widely recommended for its safety and effectiveness.

Many gardeners mix the paint with water in a one-to-one ratio to create a breathable, easy-to-apply solution. After cleaning the lower trunk, use a brush—not a sprayer—to coat the surface evenly, extending from the base up to the first branches. Some people also blend in a bit of joint compound, which can add durability and help discourage pests.

Although trees may sometimes carry colored markings for other reasons—such as identification or land boundaries—the white-painted trunk has a single purpose: protection. It’s a simple, time-tested habit that reflects attentive care. By making this part of your seasonal routine, you’re giving trees a better chance to stay strong, healthy, and resilient year after year.
